Is Link Swapping Killing your Web site?

Link Swapping is Killing Your Website

By Michael Cheney
Author of “The Website Marketing Bible”

I created my first website in 1995. Shortly after it went live I realized that nobody apart from me could see it. It dawned on me that this ‘Internet thing’ is all about being part of an interconnected network of websites. I needed to start getting connected to other websites.

Much has changed since then, but it seems the desire and pressure you face as a website owner to exchange links shows no signs of fading. However, link swapping is killing your website. Here are five reasons why:

1. It’s addictive: It’s true. You might not be that far down the link-swapping path yet, but I promise you it will happen sooner or later. One day you’ll find yourself laughing like a maniac as you run a report to see how many in-bound links you have and start rubbing your hands gleefully as you reach that magic milestone you set yourself six months ago. You’ll start mainlining reciprocal links.

A Definite Plus to Affiliate Marketing

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

For those of you have made the full-time plunge into affiliate marketing, you know this to be true. But a definite plus to affiliate marketing is not having to deal with crappy bosses!

I just found a great post at the Newspapergrl blog that I am sure some of you can relate to. If you are a full-time affiliate marketer and have any of these problems…you work for a real jerk :-)

Here are a few of my tips if you want to be nominated to be a crappy boss:

  • Humiliate employees in front of their peers - one of my all-time favorites (I’ve seen it done by CEOs down to regular Joes)
  • Never show appreciation or give credit to someone else (remember, your ego comes first)
  • Be sexist. Women don’t belong in the workforce, they belong in the home! Be condescending and question their judgement as much as possible. You know you’ve hit the jackpot if you can make her cry.
  • Send an email criticizing an employee and make sure they “accidently” read it (passive agressiveness works best when you’re afraid of confrontation).
  • Be threatened by rather than learn from an employee with different skills than you have.

What Line of Insurance Should we Add Next?

Tuesday, November 28th, 2006

I will be at our annual end of the year strategic meeting this weekend in Nashville and one of the main topics is “Which insurance line should we add next?”

Earlier today we sent out a feeler to our agents to understand the demand side of things, so I wanted to get a feel for the supply side as well.

The question I have for all of our current and prospective affiliates is simple:

If we were to add only one new line of insurance in the first half of 2007, which one should it be?

The most likely options are: Long-Term Care, Disability, and Commercial/Business Insurance, but if you have another idea send over to me!

My email is matt [at] hometownquotes.com.

your input will go a long way towards making the decision this weekend!

P.S. - If you currently have leads for a specific type of insurance and are interested, please email me as well as this will certainly help as well

Giving Thanks for Affiliate Marketing

Wednesday, November 22nd, 2006

Helen Montgomery at Affiliate Classroom wrote an excellent piece on why she is thankful for Affiliate Marketing.

I am sharing some of the excerpts below for your enjoyment!

We’re in a funny sort of business. From the inside, affiliate marketing is in its boom phase. Our industry is growing tall and wide and strong. An estimated 30% of shoppers will buy holiday gifts online, and some percentage will click through affiliate links. We’re not just flexing our muscles in the retail sector. We’re power-lifting.

Yet from the outside, affiliate marketing is a misunderstood child still. Amidst our cherished holiday memories are images of distant relatives casting us a suspicious glance and asking “What exactly is it you do for a living?” It’s as vivid as a YouTube vid. You: Keen, animated, sparkling with enthusiasm. Aunt Jane: Polite, wary, skeptical, bored. (Final cut: Auntie’s desperate dive into the punch bowl.)

The disconnect between the way insiders and outsiders perceive affiliate marketing won’t destroy your self worth or your bank account. But funny, it’s hard not to feel rattled when your nearest and dearest assume that you’re in a “fringe” business because they can’t grasp the concept of “cookies.”

So at this most wonderful time of the year, when I become aggressively grumpy at relatives, acquaintances, and all those outsiders who just don’t get it, I reach for the antidote: gratitude.

Instead of trying to explain to the uncomprehending what I do for a living, I tell them why I thank my lucky stars, every single day, for affiliate marketing.

I’m thankful that affiliate marketing allows me to work not only from home, but from the road, a bed, or a hospital. People like me, who battle chronic disease, know how painful (literally) it is to hold down a conventional job. So every morning I bless the affiliate marketing industry - it has transformed my life. I earn more, with less physical stress, than I could in a “non-fringe” job.

I’m grateful for the freedom to market what I want, to whom I want. You get to choose your industry, your niche, your market. You get to choose which products you want to sell, and which merchants to promote. You even get to change your mind without the threat of getting fired.

I’m thankful for the online world, where affiliate marketing was born and lives and thrives. The Internet is still the freest marketplace in the world. The little guy can build an empire without having to beg - and pay off - a dozen different bureaucrats to obtain permission to change the color of the sign above his store.

I’m grateful that affiliate marketing is gender, age, color, and limitation-blind. My 73-year-old mother, who retired from retail management a few years ago, is now an affiliate marketer. Sure it’s competitive, and for someone her age, it takes a lot of time and effort to get started. But you can do this if you really want to.

I’m thankful for the growth in the affiliate industry - and the growing pains. When your rankings tank or your keyword costs bloat, yes, it’s a bad day. But most of us would rather be Seabiscuit’s beat up jockey than a passenger in a small, slow, safe little donkey cart.

Will this make life for webmasters easier?

Friday, November 17th, 2006

Internet search rivals Google, Yahoo and Microsoft formed an unusual alliance to support a shared standard regarding how websites are pinpointed for their indexes.

The “joint initiative” was intended to make it easier for webmasters, or website creators, to let Internet search engines know what their online pages contained, according to Google was.

Search engines could use the information gathered in the “web crawl” process to better tailor results for their users.

Yahoo and Microsoft announced they would each support Google’s “Sitemaps 0.90″ protocol instead of using different standards for submissions by webmasters.
