One Hour SEO!

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007
Matt McGee with the Small Business SEM blog provides some great tips (once again great for newbies and a good review for you SEO gurus out there) on how to do the basics of SEO in one hour.

In his post entitled “How to SEO your site in less than 60 minutes” you will find some obvious basics and not-so-obvious quick tips on SEO.

Most of the checks are very quick, but NOT doing them can cost you a lifetime of being relegated to the 8th page on Google.

Make sure to check out the comments as well.

Tell Google What you Think

Sunday, July 1st, 2007

Seriously…they (and by they I mean Matt Cutts) want to know what you think of the webmaster guidelines and how to improve them.

Check out Matt Cutt’s post and the comments

On that note, if you have not read the Google Webmaster Guidelines, Do so! If you have not read them in the last 3 days, do so now. Believe it or not, Google actually does want to help you, if you are a legit site with a legit purpose. They want good sites to rank high.

So how do you rank high on Google? As you hopefully already know, there is no secret. But Google actually gives a pretty good idea on the webmaster tools section. Read up on it. I can only imagine if you follow their “rules” and suggestions, it just might actually work!

SEO Landmines - Great for Beginner and Expert

Friday, June 29th, 2007

Matt McGee recently posted on SearchEngineLand about SEO “Don’ts”: 20 Fatal Mistakes You Must Avoid To Succeed.

While nothing on this list will be shocking to the SEO experts out there, this list is a great learning tool for the newbies and a good reminder that the experts should review from time to time.

The list continues in the comments so be sure to read all the way down.

Some of my favorites from both the post and comments:

Don’t wait too long to implement SEO - As many of you know I am big on action! All the research and ideas in the world are useless if you end up with a to-do list 8 pages long and have not even taken the first step toward implementing them. Research and tweaking is an ongoing thing, not something you cram for and then act on.

Don’t waste your time submitting your URL to search engines - it is just that…wasted time.

Don’t ignore usability - great, you are #1 on Google…now what? Make sure these active people CONVERT too!

Don’t obsess over Google PageRank - I confess…I am GUILTY of this one. Ten Hail Googles is my punishment.

Don’t put 10s of words/phrases into the meta keyword and description. I’ve this sooooo many times and of course the feedback was awful.

MSN Search Algorithm - PPC and SEO Cannot Coexist?

Saturday, March 24th, 2007

SEO’Brien recently made an interesting post about MSN’s soon to be patented search algorithm.

According to the post, the algorithm “filter[s] the organic results to remove any duplicate listings (two domains pointing to the same website).”

This seems to make things awfully interesting. What do you think?

Funny AND Informative - Duplicate Content: An Illustrated Guide

Friday, March 16th, 2007
Rand at SEOMoz definitely wins the award so far this year for funniest and most informative post at the same time.

The Illustrated Guide to Duplicate Content in the Search Engines” outlines how search engines (namely Google) seek out and find duplicate content, penalize you for it, and result in you dropping out of hte rankings or into the supplemental rankings.

Search engines, especially the GoogleBot (illustrated by Rand on the right) are only getting better and sniffing out duplicate content and the effects of it have never been more severe..and costly.

Check our Rand’s post for some fun and helpful information!
